Fantail stitchFantail Stitch

This stitch yields a strongly patterned area of fan shapes. This makes a neat background or filling for a larger area.

I used #5 pearl cotton for my sample and it covers nicely. Although I worked my sample in a solid color, I recommend trying color combinations, working the fan in one color and the fantail in another. Thread combinations would also work well for this stitch consider making the fan in a soft wool and the fantail in metallic. This stitch makes an especially nice larger ground pattern when the fan (black lines) is worked in a solid color and the fantail (red lines) is worked in a variegated or overdyed thread.

This would look lovely on a kimono. Turn it sideways and it makes wonderful angel wings. Turn it upside down and it's shells. And it would be cool on a dragon, too!
