The
foliage stitch is an interesting pattern of blocks that, when stitched, looks
like leaves. Use this stitch to fill any size shape or background. It is quick
and covers well, but your best result with it is in a fluffy thread like wool or
silk/wool blend.
Remember that you can change the direction on this stitch four different ways. You can create visual unity by using it multiple times in a piece, but not always have the leaves pointing the same way.
I've worked the picture sample in Watercolours, using 1 ply of the 3-ply strand. The overdye gives it an interesting look, but I think you can definitely tell that I went across the rows back and forth. Therefore, I think a more subtle overdye (perhaps overdyed Medici) would be better.
