Gate Stitch

Gate StitchThis is a stitch that covers quickly and well. Since it is worked in layers, with 4 vertical stitches on the bottom, then a cross stitch on top of that, then a horizontal stitch on top of that, most threads will work well with this stitch.

My sample is worked in pearl cotton in a solid color, but this stitch also works well in two or even three colors. Try it in red, white and blue for a nautical theme.

This stitch is usually worked in "half drop" fashion, but can be worked in straight rows. You can also vary the effect by changing the positioning of the horizontal stitch on the top.
