This
is one of those stitches that doesn't look very good in a diagram, but looks
really cool when you stitch it. It makes a delightful pattern and is fun to use
in lots of different threads.
My sample is worked in #5 pearl cotton for the part eyelets and Watercolours, using 1 ply of the 3-ply strand, for the upright cross stitches. This stitch would work well in metallics. It looks best in a lustrous thread or a twisted thread (like pearl cotton or Patina).
The best part about this stitch is that it forms a grid of stitches going diagonally in both directions, so it makes a good filling for small to medium areas where you don't want a definite diagonal. It works really well for something like an angel's skirt or a patterned rug or upholstery or for wallpaper. I've used it as a stripe within a border, and used three different colors for the upright cross stitches to create the effect of shading. Consider putting beads instead of upright cross stitches in the spaces. Don't forget to widen the holes where your eyelet stitches meet.
